Chelsea managed to leave Anfield with a deserved point on Saturday afternoon, despite having to play the entirety of the second half with just 10 men after Reece James' sending off.
Match Report
Kai Havertz gave the European champions an early lead but his opener was cancelled out by a Mohamed Salah penalty in first-half stoppage time.
Thomas Tuchel's side started lively and found themselves ahead midway through the half. James swung a corner towards the near post where Havertz arrived and produced an exquisite header that looped over Alisson Becker and into the far corner.
Romelu Lukaku had a chance to double Chelsea's lead but Andy Robertson deflected it wide, before a moment of controversy allowed the Reds to level.
James made a goal-line block, only for VAR to intervene and rule that a handball had occurred after the ball deflected off of his leg. A penalty was correctly awarded, though Chelsea were unhappy and will feel aggrieved with the decision to give James his marching orders. Salah madone mistake from 12 yards.
The second half saw Chelsea excellently keep Liverpool at arm's length, never really conceding a chance to their hosts despite the numerical disparity.

Chelsea defended with 5 in Tuchels part that was a smart move. It’s not being clueless it’s making the smart move and it payed off for him and players. Ole and Pep would most likely play it if they had 10 men and were playing a team that only attacks. If they don’t one thins is for sure because they don’t like playing that formation it doesn’t suit them. It’s like the 3-4-3 formation. For me Conte is the master of that formation. Klopp wouldn’t use such a formation because it doesn’t suit his style.

just to clarify the rule : # if defending player's arm moves towards the ball which stops a ball going into the post, it's considered deliberate (even if the player actually moved the arm towards the ball without deliberate intention) and will be given a red. # but if it is the ball that moves towards the arm and hits it, it is a penalty without a red. In this case you can see there is a forward movement of the arm towards the ball and that's why Reece was given a red. We can debate on whether the rule is right or wrong. but that is the rule now and referee only adhered to the rule book. As unfortunate as it is for Reece and Chelsea.

Stats don’t matter most of the game. Possession/shots how many times are we going to go through that? People seem to think that stats “matter” you can have possession and a lot of shots, but still doesn’t make you the better team. We’ve seen it time and time again, but there’s blind people who don’t understand. Liverpool wasted their chances couldn’t even beat a 10 men team they have 45+ add on time all that time to score at least one goal that shows us that Chelsea are still superior to us. If they didn’t give him that red we would’ve lost. Chelsea was taking their chances and scores while we took our chances and wasted them. A lot of those missed chances should’ve gone in. We could’ve been the better team statistically, but there’s no way Liverpool deserve to be called the better team. Heck no. It’s more of an embarrassment drawing against 10.
