What are Liverpool's January transfer plans?
Liverpool's priority remains the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold. They will only make new additions if the right player is available and most of the work they will do will be for the summer window.
As of January 1, the three aforementioned stars of their Premier League and Champions League-winning teams can technically speak to foreign clubs about a summer move, with their contracts expiring in June.
Salah told Sky Sports on Saturday that he is still "far away" from signing. "I don't want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really has moved on," he said.
Van Dijk also remains without a new agreement and interest in Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid is thought to be very strong.
It means that, despite their efforts to get those players to re-commit, they must also look at potential long-term additions in these positions, while they are also thought to be looking at the defensive-midfield area.
However, despite his obvious talents and reports he is now more open to a move, Liverpool are unlikely to return for Martin Zubimendi considering he turned them down in the summer.
Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo are two forward players the club have been watching closely in 2024, however reports they are keen on Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush have been quashed by sources on Merseyside.
Arne Slot has Liverpool reaching for the title after a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham so he will be keen not to upset the current balance in January.
Defender Rhys Williams returns from a loan at Morecambe and is likely to be loaned back out again elsewhere.
Which Liverpool players are out of contract in the summer?
Virgil van Dijk
The Liverpool captain, 33, says there is "no deadline" over talks for a new contract as the club continue negotiations with his representatives. He said in December that he has four more years left playing at the top level.
Mohamed Salah
The same, it is understood, goes for Salah. He is said to love living in Liverpool, where his daughters go to school, and is not keen on moving. He wants to be a Liverpool legend and keep breaking records at Anfield.
But as with Van Dijk, there is still no resolution over a new contract and, as it stands, the 32-year-old forward will be a free agent at the end of the season, and he said an agreement was "far away" at the end of December.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
There is a contrast in talks with Alexander-Arnold, who is also out of contract in the summer and wanted by Real Madrid.
The Spanish champions have a track record of picking up stars on free transfers, signing Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba in recent years, and are hoping to do the same with the England international.
On the eve of the transfer window, Liverpool turned down an approach from Real Madrid. There was no formal offer but an approach was made by the Spanish side.
Liverpool will want to keep their academy product and preserve his value by signing him to a new deal.
Who did Liverpool sign in the summer transfer window?
Giorgi Mamardashvili - Valencia, £29m (joins in the summer of 2025)
Federico Chiesa - £12.5m, Juventus
When does the winter transfer window close?
The 2025 winter transfer window officially closes on Monday February 3 at 11pm UK time in the Premier League.
The window for most major European leagues - including France (1pm GMT), Germany, Scotland and Spain - also closes on Monday February 3, though times vary.
Italian clubs, meanwhile, only have until 7pm on Saturday February 1 to do their business and the transfer window in Turkey closes on Tuesday February 11.
Further afield, the window shuts in Saudi Arabia on January 30.
