Liverpool pocket £5m from Barca as Coutinho clause activated after UCL semis

Liverpool have received just under £5million windfall from Barcelona due to a recently activated clause in their deal to sell Philippe Coutinho last January.

The Reds have pocketed £4.3million from the Spanish giants after one of the clauses inserted into the deal stipulated that Barca would have to pay up should they make the semi-final stage of the Champions League.

In a dramatic twist of fate, the La Liga champions did progress to the final four of the competition, only to be eliminated by Liverpool themselves in one of the most incredible comebacks the competition has ever seen.

A 5million euros add-on was inserted into the £146m move which took Coutinho from Merseyside to Catalonia, as report the Liverpool Echo.

Jurgen Klopp's side sensationally managed to overturn a 3-0 first-leg scoreline from the Nou Camp and score four times at Anfield without reply.

Coutinho started against his former club in the decisive showdown, but was withdrawn on the hour mark and slammed in the Spanish media for an underwhelming performance.

Despite spending less than 18 months with Barca, Coutinho is heavily linked with a move in the summer and the Spanish giants are willing to listen to offers.
