LAFC started with an attacking lineup, with Hugo Lloris in goal and Son Heung-min, Denis Bouanga and Armindo Sieb leading the forward line. Minnesota, meanwhile, deployed a 4-4-2 system, with Kelvin Yeboah and Bongokuhle Hlongwane providing attacking options.
The opening stages were relatively balanced, but Minnesota gradually found space to threaten the hosts.
The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute. Joaquín Pereyra found the back of the net to put Minnesota United 1-0 ahead, punishing LAFC's defensive uncertainty.
The visitors struck again just five minutes later.
In the 34th minute, Cherrion Valerius doubled Minnesota's advantage, finishing an opportunity created by Kelvin Yeboah. Suddenly, LAFC were facing a two-goal deficit on home soil.
Minnesota continued to control the tempo and went into half-time with a deserved 2-0 lead. The visitors also held a 54%-46% advantage in possession, while LAFC managed six shots compared with Minnesota's two.
LAFC made an immediate change at half-time, bringing Nkosi Tafari on for Aaron Long in an attempt to strengthen their defensive structure.
The hosts subsequently increased their attacking pressure, looking to get back into the contest.
However, Minnesota remained disciplined and dangerous on the counterattack. Their ability to exploit space behind the LAFC defence continued to cause problems.
By the 71st minute, LAFC had registered 15 attempts compared with Minnesota's five, including five shots on target against two. Yet the visitors continued to protect their two-goal advantage.
LAFC introduced Tyler Boyd and Sergio Vásquez in the 63rd minute, followed by Jacob Shaffelburg ten minutes later, as they searched for a way back into the match.

The goal made it 3-0 to Minnesota and effectively sealed the contest.
LAFC eventually managed to get on the scoresheet, but their late response was not enough to change the outcome. Minnesota held on for a convincing 3-1 victory, completing an impressive performance away from home.
Pereyra was undoubtedly the standout performer, with his two goals proving crucial, while Valerius and Yeboah also played important roles in the visitors' attacking success.
