Lothar Matthäus: Bayern don't need winter signings, injured players will be back by then

Lothar Matthäus discussed last weekend's German Klassiker in his Sky Germany column. He also addressed whether injury-hit Bayern Munich need to sign new players in the winter transfer window.

I remember what Schlotterbeck said ("We want to stay as close to Bayern as possible for as long as possible"). For me, "as long as possible" means until the end of the season. Borussia Dortmund have shown that if they play as bravely as they did on Saturday, they have every chance of challenging for the top spot.

Musiala: I suspect something else is going on

Bayern Munich currently have a number of problems, with many players injured, and not only those who were hurt over the weekend. The length of Luis Díaz's absence is known, but Musiala's situation has dragged on for a while.

In September in Amsterdam, it was reported as a torn muscle fiber. I suspect something else has happened since then, because a torn muscle fiber doesn't take six weeks to heal.

Winter transfer? I currently see no need for action

The media are debating whether Bayern need to strengthen their squad. But the injured players may have recovered before the winter transfer window opens. The question is who could really help by then. It would have to be a top player. Unless more players get injured, I see no need for action at the moment.

Despite all the setbacks, Bayern Munich will field a competitive team in every match. Upamecano and Laimer have performed well in defense. The midfield consists of the Germany internationals Kimmich, Pavlovic and Tom Bischof, while in attack, besides Kane, Alphonso Davies and Lennart Karl can also play.

Too much talk about Karl

Regarding the recent discussion surrounding Karl, I think too much is being said. I understand Uli Hoeneß's criticism, but I also understand Karl saying he likes to wear pink. It doesn't matter to me if he comes to training every day in pink, green or yellow. That's his style and personality. On Saturday, Michael Ballack said something again, and minor issues were blown out of proportion. I don't know why this is being brought up again now.

Atletico Madrid will not be easy, even for Bayern's strongest squad

Bayern will always have eleven excellent players on the field, but even with a top squad, the away Champions League match against Atletico Madrid (Tuesday, 9 pm CET, with live text commentary) will not be an easy task for the Bavarians. The match will be played at the venue of next year's final, which is undoubtedly extra motivation for Atletico Madrid. Simeone's team will give everything in front of their home fans to keep the three points in Madrid.

Bayern, like Atletico Madrid, are under pressure (click here for the Champions League standings). If they drop points again, it will be very difficult to finish in the top eight and avoid the playoffs. They are almost forced to win, because a tough away game in Manchester still awaits them. The two points dropped in Norway could ultimately prove very costly.

I would never give up on Jonathan Tah

In Bayern's defense, Tah is currently behind Min-jae Kim. He is slightly at a disadvantage right now, but that could change quickly. Jonathan is not someone who gives up, and he has high quality. I would never write him off, and I believe he will still be a very important player this season, also for the Germany national team.

Füllkrug is indispensable

On Thursday, Klopp will announce Germany's squad for the two international matches against Serbia (live exclusively on RTL) and the Netherlands.

For the September and October Nations League matches, the national team coach called up a total of 44 players, including many newcomers.

I disagree with the idea that we can only rely on young players. We should rely on players who perform on the field and prove themselves through their ability, regardless of age. We cannot ignore Füllkrug, who leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with 9 goals. In other countries, 33-year-old players also still play for their national teams and take part in World Cups and European Championships.

Open competition between Urbig and Ter Stegen

If there were no other options, I would also take a 33-year-old. For me, what matters is not age but goals and the player's form. Klopp said he cannot change the fact that Füllkrug is already 33. Kane is also 33, but Thomas Tuchel would still call him up.

Ter Stegen is already 34, but that is not a big issue for a goalkeeper. He and Jonas Urbig have each made two recent appearances, so I think the competition for Germany's number one goalkeeper spot is wide open.
