Manchester United have an important decision to make at the end of the season when it comes to the head coaching position
The possible hiring of Luis Enrique at Old Trafford has garnered different opinions from two Manchester United legends. Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in January, Michael Carrick was appointed as the Red Devils' interim manager until the end of the season.
The former United midfielder began his reign with an eight-match unbeaten streak, including six wins, in a run that saw the club rise to third in the Premier League table. Last week's trip to Newcastle United marked United's first defeat under Carrick due to William Osula's stoppage-time winner.
Despite the Englishman's lack of experience managing at the top level, he's so far shown himself to be capable of leading the football giants. However, a decision by the United hierarchy has yet to be made on who'll be at the helm come the summer.
A series of names have been linked to the job, including the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi and Luis Enrique. The Paris Saint-Germain boss has the credentials required to manage United, having won 20 major honours at Barcelona and the French champions, including winning the Treble with both sides.
According to reports, the Spaniard's future in Paris is unclear due to claims he's not extending his contract with Patrice Evra believing the 55-year-old is the ideal manager to lead United back to success.
The ex-France international told Stake: "I'm not talking to the Man Utd board or Sir Jim Ratcliffe but in my honest opinion, with no disrespect to PSG or Nasser Al-Khelaifi, but Luis Enrique would be a dream coach for Man Utd. I love the man, I love his philosophy, what he went through in his personal life and overcame it shows his personality.
"The job he's done at PSG by bringing them a Champions League without Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, it's a fantastic job. Players would have to work really hard to play for Man Utd, they'll have to run a lot and I think Enrique would bring that."
Despite his winning record, the appointment of Enrique would be a mistake United have already made, according to Wayne Rooney. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the United icon said: "I think with Luis Enrique, I've been there and we've tried different managers. We tried [Jose] Mourinho and [Louis] van Gaal.
"Then we tried the likes of [Erik] ten Hag and [Ruben] Amorim and they don't work. I just think Carrick makes sense. I felt that from the minute I knew he was going in. He's a real calming influence." Rooney insisted that keeping Carrick will allow the club to continue building rather than opt for a high-profile boss in the dugout.
He added: "I think we're sometimes quick to overlook what's right here in front of us and say, 'We've got this manager from Turkey or Spain who is going to come in and do this.' But actually they've got no interest in the football club. At least this will give the foundations for the club to keep building. The infrastructure will be back at the football club."

I think we should be patient choosing a new coach. Luis Enrique is the ideal coach for Man Untd, however let's see how strong Carrick finishes the season. if he finishes strong and well, we should stick with him. Just like Barca did with Pep and Enrique and Madrid with Zidane.

Rooney has said it all. If the owners have ears let them hear this man. Carrick has man I at heart, and knows the team more than these touted experienced managers

United board will not hire Luis Enrique, they want a baby coach they can control and Enrique isn’t one

Arsenal hired Arteta without first team experience but they have developed together, why can't United do that with their own, Carrick?

I agree with Rooney, Man United have tried managers. but none of them have performed. Carrick should improve his style of playing, a team need to be aggressive.

are you saying Carrick is the best manager out there for United, if so then Ineos and Glazers are running the club to mud, we're still united and still carry that legacy, tradition, power and even riches, go out there and get a proper manager not an OGS 2.0

Manutd Management are hell bent in gambling with the new coach for the Club which they will regret later instead of allowing Carick to continue.

Carrick is the right man for the job. He will ne another Pep Gourdiola. Rising from Barcelona and now a serial winner.

Give Carrick necessary support and build infrastructure of a good football team. otherwise be patient to allow new coach to build for three four years like pep in Manchester City.

Rooney I'm with you on this. With due respect to Patrice and Luis.... Michael Carrick just makes more sense because he played for Manchester United for more than a decade.

Carrick should be allowed to continue at least one year contract to try him than bringing Enrique who's going to come in with a different ideology that the players will find hard to adapt.
