Lyon 1-0 Lille: Noah Nartey scores to continue hosts' 10-game winning streak

Olympique Lyonnais extended their exceptional record to 10 straight victories in all competitions as they earned a hard-fought 1-0 win against LOSC Lille, whose head coach Bruno Génésio suffered a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 defeat for the first time in his managerial career.

Match Report

Both teams came into the game on the back of victories in the UEFA Europa League - a win that was desperately needed for Lille in particular as they ended their run of five consecutive losses in all competitions. Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon, meanwhile, have been in exceptional form since mid-December but could have found themselves behind just before the quarter-hour mark here when Félix Correia clipped a ball into the box to find Romain Perraud, who took a touch before blasting the ball straight at Dominik Greif.

The home side took a little while to get going but, following the midway point of the first half, they began to control possession and ultimately found the opener in the 37th minute. Ruben Kluivert collected the ball on the left flank before powering into the box, and his cutback was side-footed home by Noah Nartey on his debut. The visitors responded well after falling behind, yet they couldn’t find the equaliser before HT as Hákon Haraldsson flashed an effort over the bar with a shot from distance.

Lille dominated the early stages of the second half as they aimed to hit back and avoid a fourth consecutive league defeat for the first time since 2016, but Lyon’s excellent defence stood firm. Ngal'ayel Mukau had a half-chance with around an hour on the clock when he fashioned space in the box, although the Congolese could only drag his effort wide. Shortly after, play was halted temporarily by referee François Letexier due to chants from the crowd.

Once play resumed, Lille moved back into the ascendancy, while Lyon were on the back foot for large parts of the second half. Still, the visitors struggled to trouble Greif in the Lyon goal, directing several shots off target. Pavel Šulc almost made Les Dogues pay with an attempt from a tight angle, but Berke Özer was alert to make the save. As Lille pushed forward, Lyon were dangerous on the counter, and Endrick almost secured the points when his effort from outside the box flew narrowly wide.

In the end, the solitary goal was enough for Les Gones to claim all three points and continue their charge up the Ligue 1 table as they cement their place in the top four. Lille, on the other hand, have now won just once in seven across all competitions, and Génésio will be majorly concerned by his side's form as they lose more ground in the fight for a UEFA Champions League qualification spot.
