Lyon winger Malick Fofana (20) had to be stretchered off during Les Gones‘ Ligue 1 home win against RC Strasbourg following a challenge from Ismaël Doukouré, for which the Strasbourg captain has been sent off. Fofana was hospitalised after the match and underwent scans to understand the severity of his injury. Further exams undertaken today have revealed that Fofana has sustained a serious right ankle sprain with further strains that will most likely require surgery, according to Les Gones.
Should Fofana were to undergo surgery, he’ll spend several months on the sidelines. It is a considerable injury blow for Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon, considering their rather limited options on the left wing. Ghana international Ernest Nuamah remains out after sustaining an ACL injury back in April. Nuamah is not expected to be back until 2026.
“Olympique Lyonnais will put in place all necessary measures to ensure Malick Fofana receives the best possible medical care and supports his rehabilitation, in order to plan for his return to the squad as quickly as possible“, Lyon write in their statement. OL will play Paris FC away on Wednesday.
