MEN: Man United consider Emery to replace Carrick but face hefty compensation fee

According to the Manchester Evening News, Man United may have to pay a substantial compensation fee to appoint Aston Villa manager Unai Emery. The Spaniard is one of the leading candidates to succeed United's current manager should he depart.

The Manchester Evening News understands that Carrick will remain in charge for this weekend's match against AFC Bournemouth. However, the former Red Devils midfielder is under immense pressure following a 4-1 away defeat to Como in the Champions League.

Man United have won only 2 of their 11 matches, making this their worst start to a season since 1986. Bruno Fernandes' sharp criticism of Carrick after the match also suggests cracks have appeared in the dressing room. The club has held talks about potential successors, with Emery among several managers being considered.

However, appointing him as manager would come at a considerable cost to Man United. The former Arsenal manager reportedly earns between £10 million and £12 million per year at Villa Park, and his contract runs until 2029, giving Aston Villa significant leverage in negotiations.

The highest compensation fee in managerial history remains the £21.5 million Chelsea paid to bring Graham Potter and his team from Brighton & Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge. If Man United want to lure Emery away from Villa Park, they would have to pay a fee close to or even above that figure.

Compared to Emery, some managerial options are cheaper and more accessible. According to The Guardian, former Bayern and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is also among the leading targets for the Old Trafford job.

He is currently a free agent after Germany parted ways with him following their unexpected exit against Paraguay in the World Cup Round of 16. However, Nagelsmann remains highly regarded in Europe, particularly by Man United's director of football, Christoph Freund, who worked with him at RB Leipzig.

Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is also a free agent, as is former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, who has previously been linked with Man United.

Kieran McKenna is also on the list, having been considered a candidate while managing Ipswich Town. He served as Man United's U18 manager from 2016 to 2018 and as assistant coach from 2018 to 2021, and he remains highly respected within the club.

But Carrick remains in charge and will lead Man United in their home match against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday. Asked whether he felt under pressure, he said: "It's not about me right now, and it's not about how I feel about it."

"It's about how we want to present ourselves as a team and as a club, and how we should be presenting ourselves. Results sometimes come and go, but you have to do things the right way, and we didn't do that this time."

Man United will then face Chelsea away before the international break, host Roma in the Champions League, and face Aston Villa again at Old Trafford.
