Maddision first words on Tottenham move as £40m move from Leicester confirmed

Tottenham transfer news: Ange Postecoglou's third summer deal was confirmed on Wednesday with the signing of James Maddison

The attacking midfielder becomes Ange Postecoglou's third signing with Guglielmo Vicario following Dejan Kulusevski through the door in sealing a permanent transfer. Newcastle were leading the race for the England international but a move for Sandro Tonali for the Magpies took the priority. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy then took that chance to move quickly to sign Maddison following the Foxes' Premier League relegation.

Leicester had set a valuation of £60 million, but Spurs have been able to pull off an impressive summer transfer swoop to sign him for just £40m. Speaking for the first time following his move, Maddison said: "Hello Tottenham Hotspur fans James Maddison here, I can't wait to meet you all, come on you Spurs!"

During his five seasons at the King Power Stadium, Maddison scored 55 goals and grabbed 41 assists across 203 appearances. Despite Leicester's disappointing campaign, which saw them relegated to the Championship, Maddison was still able to grab 10 goals and nine assists from 32 matches.

With a creative midfielder now through the door, focus switches to the defence in the summer window for Postecoglou. Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen has been linked as an option at the back, but as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have opened direct talks with Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven.

Liverpool have also held a previous interest in the Dutch defender, but Spurs have made the first move. The Italian journalist also noted a verbal proposal being submitted will happen soon, with van de Ven also said to be keen on the move.
