HARRY MAGUIRE is hopeful of signing a new Manchester United contract before 2025 is out.
Centre-back Maguire, 32, is approaching the final eight months of his existing deal but discussions are underway about a renewal.
United’s director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves has held initial talks with the England international's representatives.
Maguire had the one-year extension in his contract triggered in January at the behest of head coach Ruben Amorim, who added the former club captain into the new leadership group in the summer.
Although United attempted to negotiate a reduced salary with the defender's former team-mate David de Gea before he left two years ago, Maguire could remain on the same terms.
His salary has been reduced by 25 per cent since United failed to qualify for the Champions League in May 2024, so he is already on around £140,000 per week.
Amorim made the ex-Leicester star captain in the League Cup defeat at Grimsby Town in August - the first time he had led United since he was stripped of the armband by former manager Erik ten Hag in July 2023.
Despite his continued absence from the England squad, Maguire has enjoyed an impressive couple of years at United since a £30million transfer to West Ham collapsed.
The former Hull star's consistent form, as well as his heart-stopping 121st-minute winner against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals in April, have seen him become a fan favourite among the Old Trafford faithful.
The defender was previously subjected to boos by United fans on pre-season tours of Australia, the United States and Ireland.
Maguire is the oldest of United’s five specialist centre-backs and he has played in 38 of Amorim’s 50 games in charge.
Man Utd signed him from Leicester for a world record £80m fee for a defender in 2019 and he remains the most expensive defender in the game’s history.
Maguire has played 253 times for United and he received a commemorative frame from director of football Jason Wilcox to mark his 250th appearance last month.
