Man Unitd legend BLASTS Erik ten Hag after tough start to the season

Another former Manchester United star has blasted Erik Ten Hag, with the legendary striker giving a brutal assessment of the side's start to the season.

The Red Devils cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday to give the league table a slightly kinder look.

The Old Trafford outfit were coming off the back of haunting defeats by Brighton and at home to Liverpool which had ramped up the pressure on Ten Hag.

The Dutchman only found himself in the dugout at the start of the campaign after victory in the FA Cup final against Man City in June saved his job, following a nightmare 2023-24 season which saw the Red Devils finish eighth on just 60 points.

And Dwight Yorke, who scored 66 goals in 152 matches for the club, has expressed his frustrations at the side's ongoing plight, in an interview with beIN Sports.

Yorke said:  'We are a million miles away from winning the Premier League.

'When talking about the current manager, this was a person to take us forward, and we thought after the first season this was the guy.

'What has happened? Yes we have managed to win the FA Cup last season, but where we are doesn't mean that we're a good team after winning the cup. Winning a cup is great, we've got to keep the trophy cabinet ticking over.

'But where we are as a football club, the identity in terms of how we play, where we finish, goals conceded, number of goals that we've scored is the worst in our history since the Premier League started in 1992.'

Ten Hag came out fighting after a convincing display at St Mary's went some way to answering the 54-year-old's many critics.

'We have to win every game and we did today,' he said Ten Hag. 'Sometimes you have to find a way to win.

'In the first minutes of the game, we had some problems but after Andre stopped the penalty and the goal by Matthjis de Ligt, the game was all ours.'

Yorke's scathing remarks come after former strike partner Teddy Sheringham made comments of a similar nature during the international break.

He said: 'When you're finishing eighth in the Premier League, that's quite clearly not good enough for Man United. Full stop. End of story, for me. You've got to change what's going on.

'When you look at the inconsistency of last season, and that has followed on, without a shadow of the doubt in the first three games of this season... you can see there's been no change whatsoever.

'Different players, maybe. But still no change in the philosophy and the way Erik ten Hag wants to play. Look, I don't want to see people getting sacked. It's not nice to say that people shouldn't be in certain positions, but he shouldn't be there. It's not good enough for Man United.

'Do I think the manager will be there at the end of the season? No, I don't. I think he'll be gone by Christmas.'
