Manchester United were beaten by Bayern Munich at Old Trafford to finish bottom of their Champions League group after a bitterly disappointing campaign.
United knew they had to beat Bayern, who were already through as Group A winners, for a chance of progressing.
United held their resolve for the entirety of the first half, despite Harry Maguire being forced off with a groin injury, and impressed in the opening exchanges of the second before coming undone.
Bruno Fernandes was wasteful in front of goal, first spurning a shot over the bar before dragging another decent chance wide. He wouldn't be given another chance as Bayern finally opened the scoring.
Bayern's Kingsley Coman scored the only goal in the 70th minute when he was played in by England captain Harry Kane.
Erik ten Hag's side won just one of their six group games.
Defeat means United also missed the chance to drop into the Europa League by finishing third.

Without being sentimental, looking at this Man U group closely, one would tell that it was bound to be a failure for Man U, right from the beginning. I mean, for a team that last won the league 13 years ago and have been struggling to get into the top4 to have been paired with German champion, Danish champion, and Turkish champion. it all goes to show how daunting a task this was going to be for Man U. Should they have qualified, they would have been the weakest team remaining in the tournament. This one is gone. I'm not going to apportion blames; I'd have to accept the fact that eras do come to an end.
