Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes the decision to dismiss Jose Mourinho was an obvious one and that the board had no choice but to take action.
The Portuguese boss was given the boot earlier this week following their torrid start to the season and Rooney believes it was necessary.
'Something had to change and it was the right decision,' the former United striker told BT Sport ahead of their Premier League clash with Cardiff.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as Mourinho's successor on an interim basis and takes charge of the team for the first time against his former club Cardiff.
The Norwegian has already transformed the oppressive atmosphere of Mourinho’s final months at the helm.
Paul Pogba had a toxic relationship with Mourinho and has been given a chance to turn over a new leaf with Solskjaer offering him an opportunity to start again for United on Saturday - something Rooney believes is important.
He added: 'To be a successful football club, you need everything to be right, to be happy.
'That rubs off on the players. The relationships between some of the staff and the players wasn't great.
'But the players are smiling again. It's a good move for the club, and it'll be fascinating to see how Ole sets the team up and how they play today.'

I salute Wayne Rooney's constructive and critical analysis , as well as his honesty regarding the toxic relationship that existed at Man United between Jose Mourhino and the players . Rooney briefly addressed the core cause of unhappiness that negatively affected the manager-players relationship . He objectively and without bias looked at the broader picture and correctly zoomed into the main cause if Man United's poor performance as revolving around Mourhino's robust management style , his one-man crusade to control the team and players as thoughtless commodities he owns , and his failure to listen to his players suggestions and inputs . As I earlier wrote , Jose Mourhino has an inflated-ego problem . He sees himself as the Supreme repository of Football Knowledge unmatched by any coach in the world of Football. To me his achievements pales into insignificance by his failure to win the Greatest and Ultimate Football Prize in the world , the WORLD CUP or TROPHY . It is in this biggest Arena where Men are separated from Boys . This is still the elusive goal to Mourhino . What still shocks me about what started as the Mourhino-Pogba beef affected the WHOLE team . Pogba rightly stood up to Mourhino's bully-boy tactics , to his arrogance , Rudeness, inconsiderate behaviour and lack of decorum towards him and other players in general . Jose Mourhino was not alone in this crusade of messing this Great institution called Manchester United . He was joined and supported by a group of ex-players or retirees of yesteryears who pandered to Mourhino's whims and dictatorial management-style . Neville , Carragher , Fletcher , Morgan and recently Keane have jumped into the bandwagon of Anti-Pogba and anti-players brigade who shamelessly criticise and crucify the team while exonerating the main culprit Jose Mourhino . Mourhino lost the respect of the players because he is rude , mean , lack human relation skills , treat players like soulless commodities and his team management skills are grossly lacking . He fights with players , other opposition managers , fans or supporters and the media are known and well documented . Mourhino is also a serial hobnobber from team to team across Europe . He hardly completes 3 seasons in one team . WHY has Portugal his home country near appointed him as its National coach ? . I want to say to those Legend who criticised Pogba alone while shielding Jose Mourhino despite the mess and havoc he has caused to a Great Team , "SHAME ON YOU . You witnessed Mourhino wrecking havoc to the team and you remained silent . You instead picked on Pogba and other players because they are SOFT TARGETS . You lacked guts to confront Mourhino because you are COWARDS . You chose to be Jose Mourhino's defenders and praise-singers . You shamelessly idolisers a man who failed Man United . You deliberately made Pogba a scapegoat for Mourhino's failures and mismanagement . You ruthlessly pursued an Anti-Pogba vendetta to demoralise and destroy his football career . You rallied around a man who failed millions of Man United fans worldwide . Your stand against Pogba was not based on the Principle of Fairness , but rather on the narrow and misguided principle of vindictiveness against a Supremely Talented Young Man who was highly instrumental with his fellow country men in winning the FIFA 2018 WORLD CUP IN RUSSIA . Pogba does not have to prove himself to you guys . He has already done that . His impressive CV attests to his undoubted football capabilities . In future you guys must weigh all the pros and cons on both sides by looking at the HOLISTIC picture of events before attacking players . Today's players have more bargaining powers than during your times . Football has evolved with time . Stop behaving like medieval Monarchs or Aristocrats .
