Man Utd place Real Madrid star on transfer shortlist to replace Paul Pogba

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Real Madrid star Federico Valverde as a potential replacement for a wantaway midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman’s contract at Old Trafford is set to expire at the end of the next season and the player has made noises that he could be on the move.

Firstly, Pogba suggested a move to Real was a “dream” before agent Mino Raiola sparked further speculation, claiming he will look to leave in 2021.

Earlier this month, Pogba's brother Mathias told United that they must sell the midfielder this summer if they hope to receive any transfer fee for the star.

Mathias, who plays for Spanish side Racing Murcia, appeared on TV show El Chiringuito.

And when asked about his brother he said: "He is happy. He is improving his game.

"He has a year left on his contract. I don't know (if he will stay until then). I can't help you right now.

"The only thing I can say is if United want money, they have to sell him now. That's the only thing I can say. If no, he'll go for free.

"I haven't heard anything about him renewing his contract."

With that in mind, United bosses are beginning to look at possible replacements for Pogba, with Valverde reportedly on the list.

The Sun report that the Uruguay midfielder has been scouted on a number of occasions, with efforts ‘ramping up’ during the current campaign.

The 22-year-old has been one of the few bright sparks for Los Blancos with Zinedine Zidane’s side trailing Atletico by five points, having played two games more.

Valverde has three goals and one assist this season and his box-to-box style seen as similar to Pogba’s.

The report adds that United see his versatility as a huge plus and is on their shortlist of players to sign in the summer.

Valverde has four years remaining on his deal with the La Liga champions, with a release clause believed to be in the region of £450million.
