Manchester United have received a £21million offer with a 50% sell-on clause from Italian club Lazio for exiled forward Mason Greenwood.
The Englishman, who is sure to leave Old Trafford this summer given he's not part of the first-team picture, was on the verge of joining French club Marseille. However, a public outcry from the club's fans and the city's mayor calling for the deal to be scrapped has seemingly put the transfer on the brink of collapse.
One of the other suitors who have expressed an interest in the player, Lazio, have now come forward with a new offer that United may not wish to turn their noses up at.
Lazio's president, Claudio Lotito, has told Il Messaggero: “I offered €25million plus 50% on future resale, plus bonuses and commissions. Yet several teams have emerged to disturb us. After Juventus and Napoli, it seems that everyone is turning up. Maybe they are terrified that we can get him, and they want to blow everything up."
A tally of 10 goals and six assists in La Liga earned him admirers, and Lazio has clearly emerged as one of the favourites to sign the 22-year-old. The club have now come forward with their improved official proposal after their initial approach was reportedly rebuked.
Greenwood saw charges levied against him in 2022 of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm – all of which were dropped in 2023. United decided not to allow Greenwood to return to the club and shipped him out to Getafe, where he spent last season on loan before returning to Old Trafford.
His future is still to be worked out, after Lazio reportedly submitted a £16.8million offer earlier this summer, which the Red Devils swiftly rejected. Marseille then came in with a £26.7million offer of their own, which United accepted – but that move has stalled.
The Red Devils could have received a much higher fee if they had sold Greenwood when he was catching attention in the first team at Old Trafford, but now, United may well be tempted to accept Lazio's latest proposal, which includes the generous sell-on clause.
With Greenwood on his way out, Joshua Zirkzee has already arrived from Bologna for £36.5million, as the club looks to move on and build on last season's FA Cup triumph.
