Man Utd suffer huge transfer blow as Viktor Gyokeres makes preference clear

Manchester United could miss out on Viktor Gyokeres this summer with the striker pushing for a move to a club who can offer him Champions League football.

The Sweden star, 26, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for months and is no stranger to Ruben Amorim, who worked with the former Coventry City man closely at Sporting Lisbon before swapping Portugal for the Premier League.

United have struggled for goals this term with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both disappointing. But a summer swoop for Gyokeres is by no means a sure thing.

According to The Sun, Gyokeres remains United's top striker target, however, he wants to play in the Champions League - which is likely to cause complications for United.

The Red Devils are currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League in 14th place with two thirds of the 2024-25 season now gone. Even if Amorim were to oversee a dramatic upturn in form during the final months of the campaign, a top-four finish seems highly unlikely for his beleaguered charges.

The club's only potential route to the Champions League would involve winning the Europa League which, again, may be easier said than done, although they have reached the knockout stage of the tournament.

While United's hopes of signing Gyokeres are up in the air, he is expected to leave Sporting Lisbon regardless this summer and interest is bound to be high in a player who has plundered 37 goals in just 39 games for his club this season.

The same report outlines that Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta is another player who United have courted. The Frenchman is said to have key attributes which would make him a good fit for the lone frontman role in Amorim's favoured 3-4-3 formation.

Other strikers who have been linked with United in recent months include RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, who Arsenal are expected to try and sign in the summer.

Ipswich Town frontman Liam Delap has also been touted as a potential signing for the Red Devils after impressing for Kieran McKenna's side in the Premier League this term, where he has 10 goals to his name from 26 appearances.
