Manchester United are weighing up a summer move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has advised Ed Woodward that midfield is an area that needs strengthening in the window following Marouane Fellaini's exit in January.

United have outlined a number of possible targets with Fernandes high on their list.

The 24-year-old possesses the creative spark Solskjaer is looking for and also has an eye for a goal.

According to The Evening Standard, United are preparing to make a move for the Portugal international, who has attracted interest from several high-profile clubs around Europe.

United's interest in Fernandes comes amid speculation that Ander Herrera is ready to leave the club on a free in the summer to join Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spaniard's contract is up at the end of the season and the French giants are willing to offer him a bumper £150,000-a-week deal over three years.

The lack of depth in midfielder is already an issue for Solskjaer and if Herrera was to leave the Norwegian would want to bring in another player to replace him.

Solskjaer is yet to be confirmed as United's manager on a permanent basis but is advising Woodward on transfer strategy for the summer.
