Marcus Rashford was expected to become a Manchester United legend following his extraordinary first-team breakthrough, however, the forward is expected to leave for good this summer
Bruno Fernandes was left stunned by Marcus Rashford’s talent when he first arrived at Manchester United. As Rashford's time with his boyhood club seemingly draws to a close this summer, his captain's comments show just how tragic his departure from Old Trafford will be.
The 27-year-old forward had a falling out with Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim in December of last year, resulting in him being frozen out of the team. He managed to secure a loan move to Aston Villa in January, where he made a positive contribution in the season's final months until a hamstring injury prematurely ended his campaign.
It is understood that Villa have the option to sign the England international permanently for £40million, with his relationship with Amorim thought to be irreparable. However, it remains uncertain whether Unai Emery will risk upsetting Villa’s wage structure to match Rashford's reported weekly wage of £325,000 at United.
According to The Sun, Serie A club Inter Milan have now emerged as a possible destination for Rashford as they aim to bounce back from their Champions League final heartbreak last weekend.
Inter were thrashed 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain, a defeat that followed their late-season collapse in the race to win the Scudetto. Club chiefs reportedly believe Rashford could be a crucial signing and would excite supporters.
Their view of Rashford was once echoed by current United skipper Fernandes. The Portuguese, merely months after signing for the club in 2020, made it clear both how good Rashford was and how good he could become in the future.
Fernandes was asked to assemble his 'perfect player' and selected Rashford's 'pace', indicating just how highly he rated the forward. That's something which will no doubt be frustrating for United fans to hear, as it is a blow that the player will fail to truly reach his lofty potential at Old Trafford.
He said in an interview with BT Sport at the time: "I will choose Rashford because I think what Rashford has is pace, amazing pace, but with amazing quality. It's difficult sometimes going at that velocity to have the quality to do the right things, you know. To choose the right time to shoot, to pass, to skill. I will choose Rashy for sure."
Fernandes went on to admit: "He surprised me a lot. Of course I already knew his qualities, because he is one of the best young players in the world for me. I think I will choose Rashy because for me this [pace] is one of the best qualities he has."
Rashford, who joined the club as a seven-year-old, showed flashes of world class ability in his 10 seasons in the United first team but far too inconsistently. He only managed to score 20 goals or more across all competitions in three seasons, with those often being followed by mediocre or poor campaigns.
During his loan spell at Villa, he scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 matches, having managed to secure a regular starting spot over Ollie Watkins since the Champions League quarter-final ties against PSG.
Sadly for Villa, a contentious refereeing decision on the season's final day against United resulted in them missing out on a Champions League spot for the upcoming season.
Whether that will influence Rashford's decision on his future club remains to be seen, as it was previously reported that he favoured a move to Barcelona.
