Man Utd to play San Jose Earthquakes in half-empty stadium as US tour proved disappointing

Manchester United are set to play in another half-full venue as the trend of disappointing crowds for their US tour continues.

Jose Mourinho's men take on MLS's San Jose Earthquakes at the impressive 68,500-capacity Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

However, Sportsmail understands that officials are expecting a crowd of around 30,000 for the second match of the trip.

On Thursday night, United kicked off their trip with a 1-1 draw against Club America at the 63,400-capacity University of Phoenix Stadium. That fixture was watched by 37,660, with many cheering on the Mexican side.

As Sportsmail revealed last month, United's tour match with AC Milan on July 25 was moved from LA's 90,000-capacity Rose Bowl to LA Galaxy's 27,000-capacity StubHub Centre, with those who had paid for tickets at the original venue refunded and asked to reapply.

Bigger attendances will be hoped for when they take on Liverpool and Real Madrid, before concluding the trip.

The fixture against Jurgen Klopp's side will take place at Michigan's Big House, where 109,000 watched United play Real Madrid in 2014. Mourinho's charges will take on his former employers and European champions in Miami on August 1.

The developments may prompt discussion over the destination of future tours. United have been regular visitors to the West Coast in recent times and have chosen the US for their pre-season preparations five times in total.

Mourinho is famously a fan of the climate and facilities on offer on the West Coast.
