Manchester United Harry Maguire captain is slammed for 'banter defending'

Harry Maguire is slammed for being nutmegged and dummying a safe clearance that led to Manchester City's second goal in their 4-1 victory over Manchester United.

The England international continues to struggle this season and is often at the forefront of social media criticism when United lose a game and he is once again.

This time for a bizarre set of events that took place in the buildup to Kevin De Bruyne’s second strike, which saw Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both flail about in the box like fish out of water.

David De Gea parried Phil Foden’s fierce shot away, and the ball somehow made it through the legs of Maguire, before the defender then stretched to try and block the follow-up effort from Bernardo Silva.

His form and captaincy continue to be questioned, as is his continued selection by interim boss Ralf Rangnick, but he was recalled for the Manchester derby - having been dropped for the goalless draw with Watford last weekend.

But his return didn't go to plan as football fans took to social media in disbelief that the defender managed to make such an error in the build-up to City's second goal.

One saying: 'It's like Maguire is a rival secret agent. Every game he's making a mistake or doing banter defending.'

A second adding: 'Maguire will do a post match interview saying 'WE should be doing better’ when he’s doing s**t like this.'

Another stated: 'This thing is still upsetting me.'

YouTuber Mark Goldbridge tweeted: 'How have we conceded there? Does Maguire dummy it instead of kicking it out?.'

It didn't stop there as other football fanatics joined in, one said: 'What on earth is Maguire doing? Dummy’s ball instead of putting it out for a corner.'

Another fan said: 'Ain’t no way he dummied a safe clearance.'

United's latest defeat sees them slip down to fifth in the Premier League table with Arsenal moving up to fourth.

The Gunners have three games in hand on the Red Devils, which makes for tough reading, as a spot in the Champions League next season looks to be fading away.
