Manchester United press ahead in pursuit of Rudiger

Manchester United are stepping up their bid to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The German defender has just four months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and talks over a new deal have come to a standstill.

Manchester United need to strengthen in defensive areas after conceding far too many goals in the Premier League this season and head coach Ralf Rangnick is said to be a big admirer of Rudiger's. Captain Harry Maguire has come in for a lot of criticism for his defensive displays this year, while French international Raphael Varane has missed much of the campaign through injury.

The Old Trafford side will face competition from other clubs across Europe, however, with both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain being linked with moves for the central defender. Both Real Madrid and PSG are believed to have approached him with pre-contract offers and the promise of a significantly increased salary if he were to move on a free transfer.

The Red Devils will have to be prepared to match any other potential suitors' salary offers if they're to get their man in the coming months.
