Sadio Mane has revealed he watches Manchester City's games in hope of Liverpool's title rivals slipping up as the race for domestic glory resumes after the international break.

Liverpool go into this weekend's matches at the top of the Premier League but title contenders Manchester City have a game in hand and are just two points behind.

Mane, speaking ahead of Liverpool's clash with Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday, told Sky Sports:  'I get more nervous watching City than playing for Liverpool because obviously I am hoping they lose.

'The boss might say otherwise but I'm sure he is hoping they lose too.'

Former Southampton forward Mane has been in fine form for Jurgen Klopp's side of late – scoring five goals in his last three games.

Klopp will be hoping Mane, who also scored for Senegal in a 2-1 win against Mali during the international break, can lead Liverpool to victory when they face Tottenham at Anfield in Sunday's late kick-off.

The German tactician believes Mane is in the running to be named Liverpool's player of the year along with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Klopp told Liverpool's official website: 'Virgil is a fantastic player but we cannot have the points we have without having a lot of really good players.

'If you take the last 10 weeks, and not only that, I would say Sadio Mane is probably in the race as well. If you take the 10 weeks before that then Mo Salah is in the race again.

'At the end there will be a very, very good player winning that competition.

'If it was a Liverpool player for the second time in a row that would be really big as well because it is another sign that things are going in the right direction.'
