Controversy in Barcelona's latest match at home to Espanyol in which Lionel Messi struck a freekick, which was turned into his own net by captain Victor Sanchez.
It has been decided that there will be an investigation into who got the last touch, something that has already been done on three prior occasions.
Messi dinked the ball over the top of the wall and Sanchez, in a bid to clear it from danger, inadvertently headed it into his own goal.
After the game, MARCA decided that it should go down as an own goal, which sparked much debate as many people believe that it should have been awarded to Messi.
The reason why so much fuss has been kicked up is because the outcome could affect the goalscoring charts at the end of the season.
MARCA have already intervened on no less than three occasions in the past.
In the 2013/14 campaign, they looked into the first goal in the Real Sociedad vs Elche game.
They came to the conclusion that the goal should be given to defender Damian he attempted to clear a shot from Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, which went in off the bar.
Something similar also took place in the 2004/05 season when Diego Forlan scored for Villarreal against Albacete.
His goal went in off teammate Antonio Guayre.
Then, way back in the 1993/94 campaign, a Hugo Sanchez goal was investigated after he scored while playing for Rayo Vallecano against Tenerife.

Jealous pipo Neva win, if u grab a goal from Messi just the same as draining one drop of water from the ocean. Just accept it that Messi is a G.O.A.T, u think that can let him down......no and NEVA. Long live Messi.

Messi was already scoring because the keeper couldn't get this hands on the ball but the defender seeing that Messi has already scored tried to get the ball out which lead to a deflection into the post . Messi goal was a deflection not an own goal

Goal or own goal ? Messi will win the Pichichi anyway but the race for the Golden Boot is really close and every goal can decide. We all saw that the ball would've gone in anyway, as Diego Lopez was very late and had no chance to reach the ball. Ironic: On the picture you see one of Vinicius goals this season. His "shot" was going to hit the corner flag but the deflection led the ball into the net. The Marca actually declared this as a regular goal. If this isn't biased i don't know what else.
