Marcus Rashford will not be joining Aston Villa on a permannt basis after the club confirmed they will not be taking up their £40m option to buy him from Manchester United
Marcus Rashford is facing an unwanted return to Manchester United after Aston Villa passed up the chance to sign him permanently.
United striker Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa, where he scored four goals before injury brought a premature end to his campaign.
Villa had the option to sign the 27-year-old England star for £40million at the end of his loan agreement, but have chosen not to exercise that option.
Rashford is one of five players released by Villa – leaving the forward facing the prospect of a return to United and a reunion with boss Ruben Amorim, with whom he fell out last season.
Amorim dropped Rashford from United's matchday squad for their 2-1 win at local rivals Manchester City last December and there proved no way back for the striker, who was then shipped out on loan.
But with Villa choosing not to take up the chance to sign Rashford and with no other clubs having made an offer close to United's £40m valuation or even put forward a loan proposal, he is set to return to his boyhood club.
United return for pre-season training on Monday, although as is always the case, it will be a staggered return for the squad, meaning Rashford may not start back until later next week.
But if Rashford's representatives and United cannot find him a new home or a club at least willing to take him on loan next season, then he will have no option but to return to training under Amorim, in whose future plans he does not figure.
As well as Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa and are going back to their parent clubs, PSG and Chelsea, respectively.
Villa also confirmed goalkeeper Robin Olsen and defender Kourtney Hause have left as free agents, following the expiry of their contracts.

For Rashford to have any hope of integration back into the team, he has to see the manager and apologize with a commitment to put in the hard shift whenever called upon.

Their problem is their arrogance. See what they have been doing, making an interview and saying what would make things difficult instead of saying something positive to make the team think like you are ready for the team. But their attitude and arrogance are still eating them

Let's be honest: Where will Rashford fit into Amorim's plan ⁉️ ..... Rashford got drunk on January 25, 2024, in Belfast, while his teammates were preparing for FA Cup match; consequently, Ten Hag disciplined him: he was dropped out of the FA Cup squad. I don't think any manager or leader can stomach that kind of attitude. Honestly, I love Rashford, but he is the architect of his misfortune; he should find himself another club, since he cannot adjust and fit into Amorim's plan. Genuine Manchester United fans were traumatised last season; thanks for the narrow escape from relegation. Rashford and his likes should leave ..... please. Enough is enough‼️

Attitude is Altitude. Rashford has to now see the reality that no one really wants him. He doesn’t have the most fantastic ability or quality either as a center forward or winger. Manchester United made him. He owes Manchester United the platform for his talents. My advice to him would be to ring up the manager, apologize and give a commitment to knuckle down and put in hard graft. Not for himself alone but for the club, for the fans and for his legacy. He’s already been well paid, well looked after by the club and has the platform to take the club to the next level with the upcoming youngsters looking up to him.
