The Venezuelan striker’s goal lifts San Jose Earthquakes to a second straight win, while Hirving Lozano’s injury clouds San Diego FC’s home debut.

Josef Martínez matched Bradley Wright-Phillips this Saturday as the sixth all-time leading goalscorer in MLS history, while San Diego FC — the league’s newest club — made their home debut with a draw and an injury blow to Mexican star Hirving Lozano.

Earthquakes make it two from two

Matchday 2 of the 2025 MLS season saw San Jose Earthquakes claim their second win in as many games after defeating Sporting Kansas City, thanks to goals from Martínez and Colombian forward Cristian ‘Chicho’ Arango.

Martínez’s goal — pouncing on a loose ball in the box following a corner — was the 117th of his MLS career. The Earthquakes finished the match with ten men after Argentine midfielder Hernán López was sent off.

San Diego FC, who had made their league debut with a stunning 2-0 away win over reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy, played their first-ever home match on Saturday in front of a lively crowd at Snapdragon Stadium, but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against St. Louis City.

Lozano, San Diego’s marquee signing, was forced to leave the field with an injury in the first half.

LAFC and Timbers win in the West

Two other Western Conference clashes also seemed destined to end goalless but were decided by late drama: Los Angeles FC (LAFC) edged New York City FC 1-0, with a goal from goal-hungry defender Ryan Hollingshead, while the Portland Timbers beat Austin 1-0, courtesy of Portuguese midfielder David Da Costa.

There was no shortage of goals in Colorado, where the Rapids and FC Dallas played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Brazilian forward Rafael Navarro bagged a brace for Colorado, while his compatriot Pedrinho and Argentine playmaker Luciano Acosta found the net for Dallas.

The fireworks continued in Philadelphia, where the Union routed FC Cincinnati 4-1, thanks in large part to a hat-trick from Israeli striker Tai Baribo. Uruguayan midfielder Bruno Damiani also scored for Philadelphia, while Brazilian winger Evander grabbed the lone goal for Cincinnati.

Murrell stunner

The goal of the night belonged to Jacob Murrell, who stunned the Chicago Fire with a sensational bicycle kick deep into stoppage time, earning DC United a dramatic 2-2 draw on the road.

Elsewhere, Charlotte FC claimed a 2-0 victory over Atlanta United, with Spanish midfielder Pep Biel on the scoresheet, and Orlando City outgunned Toronto FC 4-2, highlighted by a spectacular free-kick from Uruguayan César Araújo and a goal from Argentine forward Martín Ojeda. Honduran midfielder Deiby Flores struck for Toronto.

The New York Red Bulls picked up a 2-0 win over Nashville SC, Columbus Crew edged New England Revolution 1-0, Real Salt Lake dispatched Seattle Sounders 2-0, and Minnesota United edged CF Montréal 1-0.

The second round of the MLS season wraps up Sunday with Houston Dynamo hosting Inter Miami — without Lionel Messi — and Vancouver Whitecaps facing LA Galaxy.
