Mason Greenwood can expect a high-pressure environment if he joins Portuguese giants Benfica.
After a successful season on loan with Getafe in La Liga, the Manchester United forward is set to be on the move again this summer, with several clubs showing an interest in the 22-year-old. With Greenwood’s contract having just 12 months left to run, United are eager to cash in now.
A switch to Juventus in a swap deal involving Samuel Iling-Junior has been mooted. Benfica are also courting Greenwood, who, along with his father, has held talks with the Lisbon club’s sporting director, Rui Pedro Braz, according to Portuguese outlet Record.
Benfica have had their fair share of British players over the years, especially in the late 1990s when Graeme Souness had a two-year spell as manager. The former Liverpool and Rangers boss signed a host of players from the UK, including the likes of Brian Deane, Dean Saunders, Mark Pembridge, Scott Minto and Michael Thomas.
While Getafe regularly punched above their weight in La Liga, expectation at the Stadium of Light is immense. Only winning will do, with Souness recalling: “Each game was all or nothing.”
Meanwhile, veteran target man Deane has fond memories of his 12 months in Lisbon and didn’t want to leave. He said, per World Soccer: “I couldn’t fault anything. The football is very different, slower, you were allowed a lot more of the ball and they only closed you down in their half instead of all over.
“It was great coming up with new solutions. I was out of my comfort zone and sometimes you don’t appreciate that when it’s happening. I’ve got no regrets about it and I didn’t want to leave, but the situation off the pitch forced the sale.”
