Mason Mount was the hero for Manchester United at the weekend as they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and he has now sent a message to his teammates
Mason Mount has told his Manchester United teammates to set their sights on the top four having claimed the crown of the Premier League’s set piece kings. The midfielder was instrumental in the Red Devils’ comeback victory against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
After Joshua Zirkzee ’s equaliser, the former Chelsea man fired home from a short Bruno Fernandes free-kick. The win at Selhurst Park lifted United to seventh and just three points behind the top four.
And Mount believes that the Champions League places should be a tangible target for the side. He said: “It's been up and down but I think we are in a lot better place, not just me personally but as a group, and we really need to kick on now and win more games. That's the most important thing now.
“A difficult result last game [vs Everton ] but to come back and win today was massively important. Yeah, it's time to really kick on and shoot for those top four positions.”
While United are now setting their sights on the top four, they have already claimed one title this season. Amorim’s side have already scored from a league-high 10 set piece situations - the same amount as table-topping Arsenal.
After finding the net from another, Mount expressed his satisfaction at the Red Devils’ threat from dead balls. He said: “I love being in those situations and you don't always get that many chances in a game, especially in the Premier League. So when that chance is there it's about taking that chance and hitting the target and at least making the keeper make a save.
“How big set pieces are in the game now… yeah, for me hitting the target I'm very buzzing to see it hit the back of the net and to score and most importantly get the three points for the team.”
Mount is not the only one to have expressed the importance of set pieces for United this season. Boss Amorim has also suggested that it would be nonsensical to not practice them - regardless of the opponent.

He said: “It’s so important in our league because it's hard to play against every opponent. You can sense throw-ins, free-kicks, corners, to score a goal and open the game to give confidence to the team. In the Premier League, if you don’t work on set pieces, you are losing the game already.”
United will be aiming to make it back-to-back wins over the coming week. They take on West Ham on Thursday evening ahead of a clash with rock-bottom Wolves the following Monday.
