Mendy: If all goes well, I hope to return to training this week

Zinedine Zidane was forced to make drastic changes to his defence in Saturday's victory over Granada, with Dani Carvajal playing at left-back, yet Ferland Mendy has confirmed that if everything goes well, he will make his return to full training in the coming days.

Injuries to Mendy, Nacho Fernandez and Marcelo left Zidane with no recognised option at left-back as the injury crisis that has plagued much of Los Blancos' 2019/20 campaign continued.

"If everything goes well, I hope to return to work with the group this week," Mendy declared to Canal Football Club.

"I hope to play as many matches as possible and I will do my best, there is competition everywhere, be that Real Madrid, in the national team or at other clubs."

Mendy's performances have generally been bright since Zidane gave him his chance, and the former Lyon star is determined to get back into the French national team.

"I wouldn't say it's a bad thing for me [to be in Madrid], France needs great players that are playing in great teams," he added.

Inevitably, the low point of his Real Madrid career came up with regards to the 3-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League opener, yet Mendy wasn't surprised by the French club's talent after having competed against them at close quarters with Lyon last season.

"I wasn't surprised by PSG's level, but we weren't good either," he intimated.

"That made it much easier for them to win."
