Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are undoubtedly two of the greatest footballers in history. Yet, over the past two weeks, time has reminded us that even legends are mortal: both Al Nassr and Inter Miami fell short in their respective finals.
Despite scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot, Cristiano and Al Nassr were defeated last week in the Saudi Arabian Super Cup final. After a 2-2 draw against Al Ahli, the match went to a penalty shootout. Cristiano did not miss, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory.
A week later, Messi faced a similar fate. Arriving with hopes of adding another title to his illustrious career, he saw his dreams dashed as the Seattle Sounders handed Inter Miami a crushing 3-0 defeat.
Two football legends, icons of Barcelona and Real Madrid, falling in finals in consecutive weeks. Fate can be cruel, even to the “phenomena” of football, reminding us that they too are human.
Cristiano and Messi show their worth
Despite these recent setbacks, both players have celebrated major achievements earlier this year. In June, Cristiano Ronaldo won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, scoring the goal that sent the final against Spain into extra time and ultimately to penalties.
Messi, meanwhile, made history with Inter Miami, scoring the club’s first-ever goal at the Club World Cup and helping them advance to the Round of 16.
Through September, Cristiano has scored 24 goals in 2025, while Messi has netted 27, chasing the MLS scoring title. Both continue to demonstrate their enduring relevance in world football.
Yet destiny seems to have been kinder to Messi. He already boasts an official title with Inter Miami—the 2023 Leagues Cup—and a World Cup with Argentina. Cristiano, on the other hand, is still chasing his first title with Al Nassr and a World Cup with Portugal.
