Lionel Messi was moved to tears by an audio story documenting his journey to World Cup glory after it was broadcast on Argentinian radio.

Argentine journalist Hernan Casciari's story 'Lionel's suitcase', set for magazine publication, told stories from Messi's early days at Barcelona, as well as his brief exit from the national team in 2016.

It was aired on 'Perros de la Calle', and also shared to YouTube - where the story found its way to the 35-year-old PSG star, as reported by Marca.

Alongside his wife Antonela Roccuzzo, they were moved to tears by Casciari's story, and sent in an audio WhatsApp message to the radio programme, which in turn caused the writer, and host Andy Kusnetzoff, to well up as well.

In the sincere and personal audio clip, Messi revealed he and his wife heard the story over breakfast, which caused them to cry, after reliving some of the struggles and successes which led Messi to greatness.

Casciari's tale, soon to be published in the magazine 'Orsai', has also been translated into English on the Medium website.

The 51-year-old was living in Barcelona at the time of Messi's early days with the Catalan club, and was moved to tell it.

In 2016, Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national side straight after missing a penalty in their Copa America final defeat to Chile.

However, he returned to the international fold with support from across the country, including a letter from then 15-year-old boy Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez, now a midfielder with Benfica, was alongside Messi as Argentina secured their World Cup triumph on Sunday at the expense of France after a penalty shootout - where Messi scored this time.

Messi recently gave verbal confirmation that he will extend his spell with PSG for at least a year, despite constant speculation linking him back to the Nou Camp, which he left in the summer of 2021.
