The Barcelona star is once again ahead of his longtime rival thanks to Wednesday's goal
Lionel Messi's goal against PSV Eindhoven helped the Barcelona star surpass Cristiano Ronaldo to reclaim a Champions League record and the Portugal star will have a long way to go to win it back.
By scoring Barcelona's opening goal in the 61st minute, Messi moved to 106 career Champions League goals for Barcelona.
The finish sees the Argentine reclaim the record for most Champions League goals for one club, surpassing the mark of 105 set by Ronaldo during his time at Real Madrid.
Now with Juventus, Ronaldo would be very unlikely to reclaim that record any time soon.
The two still remain atop the competition's all-time scoring charts with Ronaldo currently on 121 Champions League goals to lead the way.
Prior to the arrival of Messi and Ronaldo, Raul was the competition's most prolific scorer, having scored 71 goals with Real Madrid and Schalke.
In addition to surpassing Ronaldo, Messi's goal was his 15th of the season, ensuring that he has scored 15 or more goals in each of the last 13 seasons.
Messi's goal came in the second half, as the Argentinian star weaved his way through the PSV defense before firing a shot and finding the top corner to give Barcelona the lead.
He then assisted the club's second, finding Gerard Pique on a free kick to double the Spanish side's advantage and all but seal the top spot in their Champions League group.
Messi has now scored six Champions League goals this season, moving him past Eden Dzeko and the Roma star's five finishes to lead the goalscoring chart through five rounds of group stage play.
Barcelona can now turn their attentions back to La Liga, where they sit second, one point back of league leaders Sevilla.
The Blaugrana are back in action at the weekend against Villarreal to open up their December schedule.
They will close out Champions League group play with a home match against Tottenham on December 11, with Spurs' win over Inter on Wednesday helping Barcelona claim top spot in Group B

The history of soccer knew this man is a record breaker, so there's no doubt he has surpassed Ronaldo. Messi as they say, the Messiah of soccer always proves he is the greatest of all time in football history. He can't be compared, the world know that. soccer without Messi is like romance without kiss.

Who's GOAT? A very good question that shall remained unanswered...untill ballondor winner is revealed. However it is difficult to compare these players as both are extremely talented. Personality wise I like messi way more that Ronaldo. However skill wise messi is better technical and moves ball around more. Messi also has an insane shot. Ronaldo also has good skill but not nearly messi level. However Ronaldos shooting skill is amazing. The world may never know who the true GOAT isπ!

To me scoring goals is not about been a best player, I see Messi as the best player because he dribble perfectly, he pass the ball perfectly, and he always score goals excellently. but for others only scored goals and claim the title as a best player, I suggest best players should be those who can dribble one to three players like, (Messi, neymar, hazard, iniesta, isco, Salah, etc)but not those who depend on their players to scores, on that note Messi for now he is the best without any jealosy and the world knows about it cause is an open truth

Without malice and disrespect, I see no logic making this record breaking story so sensational. As prolific as the two players (Messi & Ronaldo) are, it's unthinkable to imagine any one of them staying at one club for life and not to score more Champion League goals than any other player for a single club on planet earth. Ronaldo should even be commended for setting that record in the first instance because he has at least navigated four different clubs as compared to his closest rival who has got stucked to Barcelona. I think the comparison should be between Messi and any other player who had been married to a single club.

thank you, I also agree scoring goals does not make you s best player. an "EXCEPTIONAL" does everything right. scoring, dribbling, and passing perfectly. not to mention assisting too,. a "best" player has to be very intelligent in how he reads the game, how to control a game.. has to know how to take free kicks, and not only to score in an open net(penalty) he also has to know how to conduct himself, on and off the pitch. Messi is all that , and then some... Messi for me, is ultimately, THE BEST PLAYER

Don't forget he has played less matches than Ronaldo and before he retire he might become the competitions highest goal scorer. I respect Ronaldo his obsession for winning is unmatched. But in comparison Messi is way better and more fun to watch. Just see his goal today even the goalkeeper was amazed how it entered.

CR7 plastic fan girls can enjoy themselves with transient facts and stats about Ronaldo for now because we all know that by the time they both hung their football boots and say bye bye to soccer,Messi will surely surpass Ronaldo in all aspects of the game and that's their fear. Most career goals, most UCL goals, most career trophies, most UCL trophies, an international trophy with the senior national team(because he already has the U-20 world cup for Argentina).
So troll him while you can because his Stats and records will troll you forever [Bear]

That Messi Has Overtake His Long Time rival on goal scoring is not a good, standard news nor means of measuring who is the best among them. Messi should not[doggreen] call that award or inch to self exaltation because he was in Spain and almighty Christian Ronaldo met him there scored provable goals, when and left him struggling in a single club.
The best competition for them now should be who has score more goals for different club?
Am sure the world know the winner and Messi is not, cannot, will not, can never and may never be in the line.
Thumbs[cup] up for Christian Ronaldo
