Messi rewarded with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Lionel Messi was one of 19 people who received the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom from the United States President Joe Biden.

The award is the country's highest civilian honor and recognises Messi's contribution as a star player in MLS as well as his charity work.

The Argentinian, widely recognised as one of the greatest footballers of all time, moved to the USA in 2023 and has won the Leagues Cup and MLS Supporters Shield in his two campaigns with Inter Miami.

He also led his international side to a second consecutive Copa America title in July.

Messi produced 1.82 goal contributions per 90 minutes during the 2024 MLS season, the joint-second-highest rate of his career - he missed 105 days of club action, the second-longest in-season lay-off of his career, due to playing in the Copa America and an injury lay-off following that tournament.

An official White House statement read: "President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else.

"These nineteen Americans are great leaders who have made America a better place. They are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.

"He [Messi] supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador."

Messi was not present at the ceremony to receive his medal due to a scheduling conflict.

Messi's Miami contract ends after the 2025 campaign, with no certainty yet on his next steps.
