Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has insisted that the Red Devils do not need a new goalkeeper, despite Andre Onana's mistake-riddled performance in their embarrassing Carabao Cup second-round defeat to Grimsby Town.
The League Two club pulled off one of the shocks of this century by sensationally knocking out Ruben Amorim's side on penalties after United had fought their way back from two goals down to force the shootout.
It was the first time that United had ever been eliminated from a domestic cup tie by a fourth-tier side. The optimism that filled the air at Old Trafford after a promising summer transfer window has quickly diminished.
Amorim made multiple changes to his starting line-up at Blundell Park on Wednesday night, but he still started a team that cost a mammoth £400million to build. Error-prone Onana, who signed for the club for £43m from Inter Milan in 2023, was one of the many big names to start in Lincolnshire.
After losing his No.1 shirt to Altay Bayindir in the Premier League, the Cameroonian started a match for the first time this season. However, he had a night to forget.
Onana was beaten comfortably at his near post for Grimsby's opener before flapping at a cross in the build-up to the second. He has since been subject to criticism from both fans and the media, but Owen still believes there is a place for him at the club.
'There have been a lot of reports linking them to one or two goalkeepers,' Owen said to AskGamblers. 'So, who knows whether that's still a position that they're looking at? Lots of people are against Onana.
'I know he makes mistakes, but I'm not as against him as a lot of people. Don't get me wrong, he's no Peter Schmeichel, but it wouldn't be the position that I'd be most looking to strengthen.'
After what was a disastrous 2024-25 Premier League campaign - the worst in the club's history - Ineos have backed Amorim in the transfer market as he looks to build a side that suits his system.
More than £200m has been spent on new attackers with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who both missed spot-kicks in the shootout defeat, making the move to Old Trafford. Striker Benjamin Sesko has also come in for a big transfer fee.
However, the same old issues seem to have arisen in the early parts of the new campaign, and many believe that Ineos needs to dig deeper into their pockets to sign a new goalkeeper and a midfielder.
Not Owen, though. The retired forward, who spent three years at Old Trafford, believes United have made the correct moves in the market.
He continued: 'I think they've done the right thing in prioritising getting some attacking players. They struggled to score goals and were useless going forward, so they got some attacking players.
'That would have been the priority for me too, and so I'm pleased to see that they've done that.
'Now, if they want to win the league, then maybe you could say, do they need a goalkeeper? Do they need other positions? And yeah, you might say, yes, but I don't look at it and think "Oh wow. That needs to change that position straight away".
'It could change, and maybe it should change at some point, but priority-wise, I think they've done the right thing, put it that way.'

When everyone is blaming you always, you will lose your confidence. Calling a child a fool all the time makes that child a fool because he will lose confidence and just believe that he or she is bad. United have successfully destroy Onana. I think he should leave the club after all a 😈 is always a devil period
man united never destroy onana. go and ask de gea.

if I were Onana i wouldn't play any match and let's see if Man U wouldn't have other disasters. When he moves back to Inter you will see his skills.

please leave Onana alone. Did he play the first 2 games? Not much criticism was.made.on the.error that was made by the other goal keeper against arsenal. Nobody is talking against Cuhna who lost the winning penalty after onana saved a penalty? nobody is talking about cuhna who has not scored a single goal in 4 matches. If Mbeumo didn't come.in to awaken the match Man U would have been beaten in 90 mins

really? even i penalty he still push the ball into the net not outside
did he not save a penalty? It's true the 2 goals came as a.result of his errors. But during penalty shut out, did he not save a penalty. why all blames on him and no blame on Curhna who would have scored a winning penalty?

The whole point of Onana being brought to Man United was to have a ball-playing goalkeeper The issue was having a lack of squad to play around a ball-playing goalkeeper and we let go of our legendary shot-stopping goalkeeper who won the golden glove the same season too… FOR FREE!
can i ask u a question the first FA cup final united lost to Manchester city was it not because of De gea fault. I accept Onana has made mistakes so has the other goalkeepers so it should not be like Onana is the cause. did u see the United starting line-up of yesterday for a coach who wants to win a match

Reading everything Owen just said has no tangible conclusion. Yes they did get d right players n if u think d goalkeeper is not d problem, y can’t u then tell us d problem.???… for me, with a good goalkeeper n maybe one defensive midfielder any coach can do wonders using our normal traditional formation 433 or 442. Amorim n his Portuguese compatriot can leave now!

don't forget Onana was the best goalkeeper in the UCL wen Manchester city won inter and he conceded the fewest goals in the UCL that year and also he won numerous trophies at Ajax before united destroyed his career with its badluck

Michael Owen is a fucking idiot. They just want to see this club remain the way it is. Onana is the worst goalkeeper in the history of the league and you’re standing there saying we don’t need a keeper. Absolute fucking prick!!

I have said it times without number that Amorim is not a good coach for manutd. even before the beginning of this season. The most painful thing is that he has the backing of Sir Ratcllife the partial owner of the Club. If concrete step is not taking imediately Amorim will take Manutd. to relegation therefore this is the time to SACK him. He will not be the first person to be sacked nor the last.
Then Southgate will come sack himself after 1 year next year will be xavi's turn and the list goes one How can you blame coach for individual performance of players Onana, amad, ugarte, heaven, fedricson all played like non-professional players
