Morocco vs Portugal preview

Morocco is the only true underdog team still competing in the World Cup and will now have the chance of qualifying for the semifinals after recording their best performance ever in the tournament.

Walid Regragui’s men went into the game full of confidence after a brilliant group stage and managed to come out on top thanks to a rock-solid defense and great teamwork for 120 minutes (0-0).

The North African nation took their ticket to the next round after scoring their three goals in the penalty shootout, while Spain weren’t able to score a single one.

Morocco, who are now on a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions, will face Portugal for a spot in the semifinals on Saturday.

Fernando Santos’ men were slight favorites against Switzerland but in the end, the difference between both teams was way bigger than what the odds suggested.

Portugal’s biggest star Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t feature from the start, but that wasn’t an issue at all for the European nation, as they were merciless vs. Switzerland (6-1) in what was the second-biggest thrashing of this year’s tournament after Spain’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica.

Some soccer pundits cited Morocco as one of the darkhorses of the tournament, but Belgium and Croatia were the two clear favorites to advance to the Round of 16.

However, the Atlas Lions feature many solid players active in some of the best European leagues, proved many people wrong by defeating Belgium and Canada and recording a goalless draw vs. Croatia to finally top Group F.

In Group H, Uruguay were a surprise elimination in the group stage as  Portugal managed to grab the first position and qualify for the knockout stage with ease.

Portugal defeated Ghana in a hard-fought opener (3-2) and comfortably came out on top vs. Uruguay (2-0). Having secured their spot among the 16 best teams in the world, Santos’ men were not at their best and South Korea took advantage of that (1-0).

Morocco vs. Portugal prediction

This one is on paper one of the most unpredictable quarterfinal ties. Portugal weren’t expected to beat Switzerland the way they did and Morocco, even if they could pull off the upset, were not the favorites against La Roja.

The Atlas Lions will be willing to repeat their performance against Spain, but the individual quality of Portugal’s players may end up making the difference between both sides.

Prediction: Morocco 1 - 2 Portugal
