Mourinho admits that United were 'deservedly punished' as Man City crowned EPL champions

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that his side were 'deservedly punished' after their shock defeat at home to West Brom saw Manchester City crowned Premier League champions.

City winning the league has long been inevitable, but it wasn't anticipated that Pep Guardiola's side would succeed in that regard today, with West Brom having previously won just three Premier League games this season.

However, a Jay Rodriguez goal saw the division's bottom side secure a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford and Mourinho felt that his team paid the price for their lacklustre performance.

United beat City last week in a dramatic encounter to delay their rivals winning the title, but on this occasion they certainly weren't at their sharpest.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Mourinho said: 'I think we were deservedly punished because we were masters in complication.

'Everything was complicated, players they didn't want to play simple. There was no fluidity in our football. We gave them the opportunity to win.

'I know them, I smile. I won eight titles and I'm not in the moon because I won against Manchester City, a match that is just three points. I saw lots of people in the moon because we won against Manchester City.'

Mourinho was eager to point out that United didn't deserve to win against West Brom and he also stressed that City were deserved title winners.

'During the week I was trying to fight that, you see the players today were trying to be stylish, one more touch, one more flick.

'A loss is harsh but we deserve to not win this match.

'Come on I won titles I wouldn't be happy is somebody tells I won the title because someone lost the match. City won the title because they were the best this season. To say they won the title because United lost is not fair to them.

'Paul (Pogba) had a yellow card and had a situation where he may have had another booking. But he was complicated like all the rest of the players, one more touch always.'

City, who are 17 points above United, have played some scintillating football at times this season and have been beaten just twice in the league.

United, meanwhile, still have a chance for glory in the FA Cup but they have still yet to win the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired five years ago.
