Mourinho says that Martial informed him of decision to leave pre-season tour in advance

Jose Mourinho has clarified that Anthony Martial informed him of his decision to leave the Manchester United pre-season tour at least two days in advance.

Martial flew to Paris on Wednesday to be at his partner Melanie da Cruz's bedside for the birth of their first child together. Mourinho is understood to be open to selling Martial and the Frenchman's agent clarified last month he wants to leave, but Mourinho had no issue with Martial's decision to return to Europe.

"I found out that Martial was going to Paris when he told me," Mourinho said. "Was two or three days ago.

"When it is personal reasons, everyone analyses that the way they think is the correct way and when a man is going to be a father in this case, it's the second time he is going to be a father, and he decides is very important for him to go, nobody has the right to stop him to go."

United drew their third successive friendly in the United States against AC Milan but prevailed after a marathon penalty shootout which ended 9-8.

"The game was good," Mourinho noted. "Good training session against a team with more time than us, with more players than us, so was a good training session.

"We played in a system [3-5-2] we don't play in many many times, so good experience too. We made a couple of defensive mistakes but with the ball we were dangerous, especially when fresh, our problem at the moment is to play 90 minutes, but for 65 minutes we were very good.

"We had a chance not to just score goals but score beautiful goals. The counter with Ander in the first-half and Alexis in the second... And in the end the penalties means nothing but I think football fans, especially American football fans, enjoy the penalty shootout and was good fun."
