Neto endures NIGHTMARE debut as he makes huge error to gift Girona opening goal

Arsenal's oldest debutant in more than 110 years made a monumental error to hand Girona a shock lead in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Neto, making his first appearance for the Gunners at the age of 35 years and 194 days, was in in place of regular No 1 David Raya.

But it was a debut to forget when he got his positioning totally wrong just before the half-hour mark.

Neto came rushing out of his goal and found himself in no-mans-land, forcing him to try a dive 25 yards out from goal.

In the end former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Arnaut Danjuma slotted in to give Girona a 1-0 lead.

'Neto, I now understand why this is your first appearance for us,' one Arsenal fan wrote on social media.

'Neto was outside the box and still tried to catch it with his hands,' another said.

Arsenal looked disjointed at the start of this clash in Spain after boss Mikel Arteta made seven changes.

Brazilian shot-stopper Neto was handed his competitive debut for the club, while the defence was reshuffled to include Jakub Kiwior and Thomas Partey, who was deployed at right-back.

Riccardo Calafiori, who scored the winner at Wolves, and Gabriel completed the defence. Gabriel was in to make his 200th Gunners appearance.

Question marks will be asked of why Neto chose to come rushing out of goal with Danjuma bursting into open space after Arsenal's attack disintegrated.

One simple through ball took out three Arsenal players and allowed Danjuma, formerly of AFC Bournemouth and Tottenham, to sneak in behind Partey and get a run in on goal, made easier by the rash decision from Neto.
