Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has said that Jesse Lingard has no right to an emotional send-off in front of the club's fans.
In the club's final home game of the season against Brentford, Ralf Rangnick chose to leave Lingard on the bench even though it is clear that he will be leaving the club in the summer.
Many feel it was harsh of the coach not to let an academy graduate who has won trophies with the club to play at Old Trafford one last time, but Neville does not see it that way.
"There was a lot of nonsense spoken about Lingard. He's been at the club a long time and done a good job," he said on Sky Sports' Gary Neville Podcast.
"But I've seen Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce not play in their last games for the club and not get a send-off in cup finals.
"They were both great captains and one of them probably is the greatest captain Manchester United have ever had.
"They didn't get the send-off they wanted, so I'm not sure why Lingard deserved it."
Neville went on to say that only two players in the United squad have a right to expect to be kept at the club during the summer.
"To feel like you have a God-given right to get some minutes on the pitch based on how they played. Not one of them, other than David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo, can complain about what will happen to them this summer," he noted.
Fans' chants against the players
During a recent 4-0 defeat away at Brighton, the United fans began telling players that they are 'not fit to wear the shirt', which Neville was shocked by.
"The players are only damaging themselves to a point where the fans won't forget. They were singing 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' - I have never, ever, heard United fans resort to that chant," he stated.
"That's a chant you would hear at QPR a few years ago or Sunderland when the fans were walking out. I have never known a United fanbase turn on a team like this one.
"It's now really clear the players have thrown the towel in. They really have. It's been a disgrace for a couple of months. It's embarrassing."

I remember those great captains playing and I get Nevs point but this isnβt twenty years ago and surely a club as big as Man Utd would aspire to reward loyal servants better than they did twenty years ago!!! The fact that Nev still remembers it all these years later shows what a stain on the clubs legacy it is. Not learning from their mistakes seem to be what they do best lately.
