New Milestone: Two female referees officiate in Segunda division for the first time

This Sunday, August 2nd, marks a historic day for Spanish refereeing. Yesterday, La Liga referees concluded their preseason training camp in Las Caldas, Asturias. Starting today, 22 Segunda División referees, including 6 newcomers and 1 female referee, officially begin the new season. For the first time in Spanish refereeing history, two female referees belong to the same professional level. Previously, this only occurred in La Liga, and involved three assistant referees: Guadalupe Porras, Eliana Fernández González, and Judit Romano.

Thus, Marta Huerta de Aza will no longer be the sole female referee in Spanish professional football. This referee from Palencia, now residing in the Tenerife refereeing group, has just completed her second season in the Spanish Second Division, officiating a total of 38 matches, with 20 this season and 18 last season. She also officiated in the Women's Professional League.

Starting today, Marta has a new partner, as another international referee, Olatz Rivera, joins their ranks. This Basque referee, like Marta, is a member of the UEFA Elite Referees panel. This season, the Spanish Referees' Technical Committee also appointed her to officiate the Copa de la Reina final between Barça and Atlético Madrid. She had previously officiated the league El Clásico between Barça and Real Madrid at the end of March.

Since her debut in La Liga in 2017, the growth of this Bilbao referee has been astonishing. The best example is that last November she was appointed to officiate the Women's U17 World Cup final between South Korea and the Netherlands. Just hours before, she participated in the European Championship for the first time. Last summer, she made her debut in the competition, and on June 12, 2025, she made her first appearance in the European Championship Group C match between Poland and Denmark.

Additionally, Olatz Rivera served as the fourth official in the match between Switzerland and Iceland, officiated by Marta Huerta de Aza; two days prior, she also served as the fourth official in the match between Germany and Poland, officiated by French referee Stéphanie Frappart.
