Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock on 55 minutes for the hosts, latching onto a Kieran Trippier cross at the back post to tap home and hand the Magpies a deserved lead.

Eddie Howe's side were handed another injury blow when Nick Pope was taken off the field after seemingly injuring his shoulder leaping to save a strike from Sergio Reguilon that was ultimately blocked before it reached him.

United thought they had sealed a late, late equaliser, only for replays to show that Antony's strike had come off Harry Maguire in the 89th minute, with Newcastle seeing out the win.
