Newcastle have accepted an offer of around £33million from Brighton for Yankuba Minteh, and that could be enough to keep stars such as Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon at the club.
The Magpies have been battling to avoid a Premier League points deduction for failing to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules, and they need to sell before Sunday night’s accounting-period deadline.
Minteh, 19, is now set for a medical with the South Coast club.
Brighton returned with an improved offer on Saturday evening and it is now expected that a deal will be concluded, easing Newcastle’s PSR concerns.
They have held talks with Liverpool over a deal for Gordon and Chelsea have enquired about Isak, both exclusively revealed by Mail Sport.
The club’s hierarchy and head coach Eddie Howe did not want to lose either player, but there was an acceptance that the club needed to trade to avoid a likely deduction of 10 points.
Minteh was also offered to Nottingham Forest and said he did not want to join Lyon last week after a £40m deal was agreed. There was also an offer from Everton..
However, Everton was only available if Dominic Calvert-Lewin went the other way.
Brighton remained in the race and Minteh was keen on joining them despite the club being reluctant to meet Newcastle's £35m asking price.
The club also considered offering one of their players as part of the deal too, but it is understood the offer wasn't in a position Newcastle needed.
Elliot Anderson has also been discussed in negotiations with Forest as first revealed by Mail Sport on Saturday.
Minteh enjoyed a stand out season on loan at Feyenoord in Holland scoring 11 goals - 10 in the league.
He joined Newcastle from Danish side OB last year for £6million and was immediately sent out on loan.
The Gambia international gained Champions League experience and ended the season by winning the Dutch Cup but was sent off in the process.
Minteh told Dutch football magazine Voetbal International in April: 'Ultimately, the Premier League is my goal. Newcastle United is the club that have a lot of confidence in me. I have no idea what the future looks like.
