Newcastle draw up list of goalkeeper targets including Kepa Arrizabalaga and Dean Henderson

Newcastle United have drawn up a list of goalkeeper targets for the summer that includes Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga and Manchester United's Dean Henderson.

Number one Martin Dubravka has been one of the club's most consistent performers but Newcastle want increased competition across key areas ahead of next season as they build their new project.

Results under Eddie Howe in recent weeks mean they are on target to secure Premier League safety and they will hold a recruitment meeting at the end of this month to ascertain priority positions for the manager.

Work is already under way with Arrizabalaga and Henderson under consideration along with Arsenal's Bernd Leno and West Bromwich Albion's Sam Johnstone.

Newcastle made moves to sign United's England keeper Henderson in January on loan but the deal would have seen Dubravka go in the opposite direction and the 33-year-old Slovakian was reluctant to go as cover for David de Gea. Henderson remains keen on making the move after a frustrating season in De Gea's shadow but much could hinge on United's asking price.

Newcastle have funds but do not wish to overspend and face competition from bigger clubs competing in Europe so are being realistic over who they can pursue and who will come.

Chelsea would want to recoup as much of their record £71.6million outlay as possible for Arrizabalaga but it is understood Newcastle would ask for a loan deal as the 27-year-old is under contract until 2025.

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno, 30, was another discussed in January and he remains an option as does West Brom's 28-year-old Sam Johnstone who is out of contract this summer and attracting attention from a number of clubs as a result.

Newcastle will want to strengthen in midfield and attack too with the likes of Leeds' Kalvin Phillips, Yves Bissouma of Brighton, Bayer Leverkusen's Moussa Diaby and Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest among the other names being discussed next week.
