Newcastle will return in the summer for £60million forward Bryan Mbuemo after having an approach rejected by Brentford.
The Champions League-chasing Magpies are huge fans of the 25-year-old who is enjoying a sensational season in west London.
A move was made earlier this month but was quickly dismissed by the Bees who have no intention of surrendering their freescoring forward.
Mbuemo is enjoying his best-ever Premier League campaign and it would take a monster offer for his club to consider selling him before the transfer window closes next week.
Only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak have scored more top-flight goals this season.
Mbuemo has so far netted 14 times and bagged three assists in 23 games. His tally has included strikes against Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle themselves in the Bees’ 4-2 home win in December.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has also praised Mbuemo as the best penalty-taker in the league after his retaken spot-kick set up the club's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
The Cameroon international remains one of just five Premier League players never to have missed from the spot, scoring from all nine of his attempts.
Mbuemo has just a year left on his current contract after this season. But, crucially, Brentford have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Newcastle's only hope of landing Mbuemo this month would be through trading players as their spending is restricted by PSR.
Liverpool and Arsenal are also massive admirers with Salah’s future at Anfield uncertain and Bukayo Saka out injured for the Gunners.
After just four wins in 13 games between September and December, Newcastle have been resurgent since then with 10 wins in the last 11 games in all competitions.
They are also on course to reach the carabao cup final having taken a crucial to advantage against Arsenal at the Emirates earlier this month.
But Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is keen not to rely only on the club’s star striker, Alexander Isak, who is enjoying an incredible season with 19 goals in all competitions - including 11 in his last eight matches alone.
Signing Mbuemo would give Newcastle goals right across their front line as Anthony Gordon who plays on the left has five goals in his last eight matches.
