Nico Williams Recalls Immigrant Family's Journey: Mother crossed desert barefoot, father worked away from home for years

Nico Williams recently spoke in an interview about the immense sacrifices his parents made for their family, admitting he will always be grateful for their decision to risk immigrating.

Nico Williams' crucial assist to Ferran Torres in the World Cup final, helping Spain defeat Argentina to win the title, will be remembered for a long time. However, the Athletic Club forward was not an absolute starter in that World Cup, having suffered an injury in the tough match against Uruguay, but he ultimately overcame the difficulties. The 24-year-old Nico is currently in the best form of his career, having renewed his contract with Athletic Club last year, the only club he has played for in his professional career. However, one of his most praised qualities is his dedication to family.

The Williams family has a story full of great sacrifices, which Nico (whose brother is Iñaki) has never forgotten. His parents, Maria and Felix, left Ghana in 1994, hoping to find a brighter future for their family. The journey was arduous, and his mother was pregnant with their first child, Iñaki, at the time. After traveling through several countries, they eventually settled in Spain, starting a new life from scratch.

Nico has recounted in several interviews the most difficult experiences of his parents' "trek." He revealed that his mother endured extreme conditions during their immigration, even crossing the desert barefoot. This memory is still deeply embedded in the family's heart, reflecting the immense hardships they once faced. His father's sacrifice was equally significant. To support the family, his father often worked away from home for long periods, even in London, with the sole purpose of ensuring the family had food and a stable life. This sacrifice left a deep impression on Nico, who confessed his gratitude for everything his parents did for him and his brother.

The first few years in Spain were also not easy. The family faced severe financial difficulties, struggling to survive amidst many deprivations. "My parents risked their lives so that my brother and I could have a better future. And they did it. I will always be grateful for everything they did for us. They are fighters who taught us every day that respect and hard work are earned, and nothing is given for free," Nico concluded.

The close bond between the brothers deepened in these circumstances. The age gap made Iñaki a strong pillar of support for his younger brother, a bond that continues both on and off the field, and both consider it one of their greatest strengths.

In an interview on the "Salvados" program, Nico also recalled that difficult period: "The water and electricity were cut off because we couldn't pay the bills, it really wasn't easy," he admitted.

Later, Nico had the opportunity to travel to Africa, an experience that gave him a deeper understanding of the reality of many people and made him appreciate his parents' sacrifices even more. He admitted that the trip made him reflect on what his life would have been like if his family had not chosen to immigrate. "I've been to Africa, and I realized what my life might have been like if I hadn't been born here," Nico said.
