Nuno Mendes and Joao Neves' two handballs in the first half caused considerable controversy.

In the 30th minute of the match, Laimer, who was suspected of handling the ball first, hit Nuno Mendes' arm when trying to pick the ball over someone. Replay footage showed that Nuno Mendes, who already had a yellow card, had an active arm-opening action, but Joao Pinheiro, the referee of the match who was also Portuguese, did not make a penalty, and even gave the ball to Paris.

Only 1 minute later, the controversial scene appeared again, Vitinha kicked the ball onto his teammate Joao Neves' arm when clearing the ball in his own penalty area, but referee Joao Pinheiro still made no indication.
