In the early hours of July 17, Atlético Madrid officially announced the signing of Argentine midfielder Thiago Almada from Botafogo. The 24-year-old has signed a contract with Los Rojiblancos until 2030.
Atlético Madrid Official Statement:
The club has reached an agreement with Botafogo for Thiago Almada, who will wear the Atlético shirt for the next five seasons. The 24-year-old Argentine is a highly talented and versatile right-footed player, capable of playing as an attacking midfielder as well as on either wing, comfortable cutting inside or playing on his natural side.
Born on April 26, 2001, in Ciudadela, Buenos Aires, Almada came through the youth ranks at Vélez Sarsfield, making his senior debut at just 17 on August 10, 2018, in a 2-0 victory over Newell’s Old Boys. After 100 appearances for Vélez, he moved to Atlanta United in early 2022, where he spent two and a half seasons in MLS, recording 26 goals and 24 assists in 83 matches and earning a call-up to the Argentine national team.
Almada represented Argentina at various youth levels and made his senior debut under Lionel Scaloni on September 23, 2022, in a 3-0 friendly win against Honduras. He was part of the squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In the summer of 2024, Almada joined Botafogo, where he helped the club win both the Brazilian Serie A and the Copa Libertadores in the same year. He then spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Lyon before sealing his move to Europe permanently.
Our new signing completed the necessary medical checks at the Vithas – Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Center in Madrid’s Arturo Soria University Hospital, before heading to the club offices at Riyadh Air Metropolitano. There, he was welcomed by our CEO, Miguel Ángel Gil, and signed his contract. Welcome to Atlético, Thiago! (End of statement)
According to Fabrizio Romano, Atlético Madrid acquired 50% of Thiago Almada’s rights from Eagle Football Group for €21 million, with all parties signing the relevant documents on Tuesday night local time.
