Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on a five-year contract.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT:
Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on a five-year contract.
Individual in a light blue shirt with tattoos on neck and a serious expression, dark background with text: 'Welcome to City Enzo Fernández'.
The Argentina international’s deal means he will remain at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
At just 25, Fernández is armed with a wealth of top-level experience, having won four major trophies during his time playing on homeland with both Defensa y Justicia and River Plate, before helping Benfica on their way to Primeira Liga success and becoming a key member of the Chelsea team that won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
Indeed, during his time in west London he developed a reputation as one of the most technically gifted central midfielders in the Premier League.
And at international level, he won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America with Argentina, before appearing in another World Cup final this summer as La Albiceleste lost to Spain in the final.
Fernández says he could not be happier to have joined City at this stage of his career.
On joining Manchester City, Fernández said: “Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times.
“Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are.
“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success.
“If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player.
“I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here.
“I want to thank Hugo, Enzo, Khaldoon and everyone at City who has made this deal possible. I want to take the faith shown in me and repay it as soon as possible.”
Director of Football Hugo Viana added: “At Manchester City, we are always looking to bring in world-class players and Enzo fits the bill.
“He is a complete midfielder: technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer.
“He is adept at playing different styles of football. He is comfortable playing a possession-based game, and he can play on the counter effectively, too.
“To have played in two World Cup finals and won major trophies in multiple countries at just 25 says everything you need to know about his mentality, professionalism and technical quality.
“We are delighted to bring him here and feel very strongly he will improve our team.”
Everyone at City would like to send a warm welcome to Enzo and wish him well during his time here. We all look forward to seeing him play in sky blue very soon.
The complete midfielder
Born in Villa Bonich, San Martin, part of the Buenos Aires metropolis, Enzo Fernández was gripped by football from an early age.
His family is largely made up of River Plate obsessives - in fact, he’s named after the famous River attacking midfielder Enzo Francescoli.
Fernández had a ball at his feet as soon as he could and football was the only life he has ever envisaged for himself.
He joined River aged just six and gradually worked his way through the youth ranks at his boyhood club, before moving to Defensa y Justicia on a two-year loan switch when he was 18.
At Defensa y Justicia he played under manager Hernan Crespo, the former Parma, Inter and AC Milan striker - an icon of Argentinian football. Fernández gradually established himself as a regular and won the 2020 Copa Sudamericana and the 2021 Recopa Sudamericana.
It was a transformative loan move for Fernández, who returned to River a better, more complete player and helped them win the league title in 2021.
A star was truly born.
European clubs were soon swarming, and it was Benfica who captured his signature, joining the Portuguese giants in the summer of 2022. Handed the No.13 shirt synonymous with club legend Eusebio, he transitioned to European football effortlessly.
But it was the 2022 World Cup that saw Fernández catapulted to global fame. Argentina won their third trophy, and Fernández was exceptional. He was just 21, yet the fullness of his game became a huge talking point across football. It seemed he could do everything: a fighter, a goalscorer and a player who controls matches.
As a result of his performances and just six months after moving to Portugal and with Benfica on course for title success, he made his move to the Premier League with Chelsea, where he went on to win the Europa Conference League, the FIFA Club World Cup and established himself as one of the division’s finest talents.
He also won the Copa America with Argentina in 2024 and appeared in another World Cup final this summer as La Albiceleste lost to Spain in the final. He currently has 49 caps and has scored eight goals.
It’s a glittering CV for a man his age.
And now comes a move to Manchester City. So, what are City getting?
In short, a winner and a world-class talent.
Fernández is arguably the perfect modern midfielder – a player comfortable in possession, with outstanding technique, wonderful vision, a great range of passing and the ability to score goals. He gets involved in games and never shies away, a leader who thrives on big occasions and in pressure situations.
His knack of arriving in the box late and getting on the end of balls is perhaps his most striking asset. He scored 15 goals and contributed seven assists for Chelsea last season in 54 games across all competitions. A matchwinner of the highest calibre.
One thing is for certain: City will be a more complete proposition with Fernández in the side.
