Gennaro Gattuso says he will leave the club after he failed to lead them to qualify for next seasons Champions League.
He told Repubblica: “Deciding to leave Milan's bench is not easy. But it's a decision I had to make.
“There was not a precise moment in which I made it, it was the sum of these 18 months as coach of a team that for me will never be like the others. Months that I lived with great passion, unforgettable months.
“Mine is a painful but thoughtful choice.
“Am I giving up a two-year contract? Yes, because my story with Milan can never be a question of money.”
Gattuso, 41, took over at the San Siro in November 2017 and guided his former club to sixth place. He oversaw 40 victories, 22 draws and 20 defeats on the Milan bench during the past 2 years.

He did a great job looking at the quality of players at his disposal & how the club was managed since 2012. No other coach could have done better than him with this team. Berlusconi is to blame for our sufferings. The Milan downfall started in 2012 when he started selling our stars & getting old free finished players instead & only for his own benefits as his other business were losing a lot. Than he sold the club to the Chinese who were even worse. & now Elliot is just another foreign company who cares only about business, not caring about our legends or even results. Milan should be owned by an Italian, a Milanese, a true loyal fan of the club. It should be managed & directed by loyal Milan lovers. Only that way this club will get back to glory. My friend, the Milan players are not better than Atalanta & that’s why the difference is just one single point. All respect to Gattuso for what he did compared to Gasperini’s & Spalleti’s expérience at first. One other issue is that U need some luck sometimes to overcome difficulties & Gattuso wasn’t lucky at all if u look at only few things, like -the defeats against Inter which came both in the last minute. -Higuains issue against Juve (missed penalty & red card). -the unfair ref decisions against Juve (2 clear penalties) -Donnaruama’s howler against Genoa at a crucial period of the season & the team’s silly mistake against Parma. & these are only some of many.
