Sami Khedira (39) returns to Real Madrid. The 2014 World Cup winner will immediately join the coaching staff of renowned coach José Mourinho (63), returning to professional football more than five years after his retirement.
This return holds special significance for the former international player. In 2010, Mourinho brought the midfielder, then playing for Stuttgart, to Madrid. Together, they won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. A year after Mourinho's departure, Khedira won the Champions League under Ancelotti.
This is Khedira's first coaching position. In the 2022/23 season, shortly after retiring, he served as a sports advisor for his former club Stuttgart. Since then, he has worked as a commentator for the streaming platform DAZN. Khedira has now left that job for his new role. He said: "This job at Real Madrid gives me the opportunity to take the next step in my sporting career."
After his time at Real Madrid, Khedira also played for Juventus, and his last career stop was Hertha Berlin. He announced his retirement in early 2021. Now, he will start a new chapter in his life with high ambitions.
Real Madrid has just experienced a disappointing season with no trophies. After parting ways with Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa taking over, president Florentino Pérez brought back coaching legend Mourinho. And the Portuguese coach has now brought his former protégé back to his side. Khedira's comments about Mourinho last year as a TV commentator also showed the deep relationship between the two: "For me, he is like my godfather. I love him and will always love him."
